5 Ways to Break Into the Tech Industry

5 Ways to Break Into the Tech Industry5 Ways to Break Into the Tech IndustryThe tech industry has been strong over the last several years IT unemployment continues to shrink, salaries inch higher each year and innovation continues to create exciting career opportunities. These factors make technology an appealing field to those both inside - and outside - the tech world. In fact, 75 percent of non-IT professionals polled in a just-completed Robert Half Technology survey said tech jobs were appealing to them. Increases in salaries and job opportunities are obviously very attractive, but close behind are the chances to learn and innovate. With so much appeal, how can a non-technology professional transition to a tech job? And will employers consider those with non-traditional backgrounds when adding to their technology staff? Many tech jobs require a college degree and training, but some have fewer barriers to entry and can be attractive career paths for those who are looking to trans ition into the field. Here are five strategies non-tech pros can follow to make a career transition to the tech industryDo yur research. Check out online job postings, or take a look at the job descriptions in our recent Salary Guide, to get a sense of what skills employers are looking for in your local market. When you understand the skills in demand for tech positions, you can emphasize your transferrable skills. Those might include interpersonal skills, proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, a customer-friendly attitude, strong communication skills and the ability to work as a contributing gruppe player.Identify gaps. While you may not have the specific hands-on experience necessary for an IT job yet, identify the gaps in your work experience and consider taking tech training courses to fill them. Where appropriate, you might also seek IT certifications. Training and certifications, in combination with your work experience and interpersonal skills, can better position yo u for consideration and separate you from other candidates.Be flexible. Remain open to positions that may be below your experience level Accepting a lower-level role may be required for a career transition into the field. Help desk and desk side support roles, for example, certainly require some technical proficiency, but can be good entry-level jobs for non-tech pros. If you have a customer service mindset and a proven track record of problem-solving, the help desk can be a great starting role to transition into the technology field.Show your passion. Many hiring managers are looking for candidates who love to learn and are inquisitive by nature. Demonstrating interest in technology in your spare time can add to your credibility as a candidate for some tech jobs. If youve created a website or mobile app for fun, or built computers or robots, you can demonstrate your passion for technology, as well as some tangible, hands-on experience.Leverage your network. Your professional networ k is a great resource when considering a career change. The people who know your skills and experience are best positioned to help you tap into opportunities that are a match for you. They can also be an advocate for you as you make your career transition. Additionally, start a dialog with your companys IT team about a transition. (Just make sure you keep your manager in the loop.) While you may be light on practical experience, your knowledge of company systems and business objectives can distinguish you from those outside the company who may have a bit more technical experience, but lack valuable internal knowledge. Its an exciting time to consider breaking into the tech industry. Due to a shallow talent pool of experienced tech pros, many IT hiring managers are more open-minded about non-traditional candidates. In fact, I continue to meet individuals who have successfully made the leap.Get an in-depth look at more than 75 IT jobs, industry hiring trends and starting salariesDOWNLO AD THE SALARY GUIDE

Shyness How I turn my shyness into strength at work

Shyness How I turn my shyness into strength at workShyness How I turn my shyness into strength at workShyness is an important part of who I am.In talking to people for my recent book, Shrinking Violets, I discovered that shyness is something that a lot of people experience in different ways. But its often not talked about or its mistaken for timidity and fear- especially in the workplace.A lot of workplaces today value dialogue and collaboration. These environments can be hard for shy people because we tend to work better on ur own or one-on-one.All workplaces should acknowledge that people are different. And we should never try to be someone who were not. But there are things everyone can do to turn their shyness into strengths.Embrace structureOne of the things shy people find hardest is social ambiguity or spontaneous social situations. Work, with its clear protocols, gives us structure. Its actually quite liberating for shy people because you can interact with people by doing you r job well and being professional.Choose a career that values solitary workA small part of my job as a lecturer at a university involves working with other people, but a lot of what I do, like preparing lectures, seminars, and electronic materials, is solitary. I like these tasks because I like working on my own.Be aware of social cuesThe thing I like least about being shy is that it can sometimes make other people feel uncomfortable. For me, shyness is often about guessing wrong about social codes or not quite understanding social etiquette. Ive tried to fight my shyness by becoming mora accepting of the need for those kinds of social codes, and to be at least competent enough in them that it doesnt upset or embarrass others.Prepare in advanceOn the occasions when I do have to speak up, I find it helpful to rehearse things. For example, if you have to go to a meeting, its helpful to have something prepared that you can say. Shy people are surprisingly good at public speaking becaus e it gives us a structure and allows us to plan our words ahead of time.Try a different communication techniqueSome shy people like creating separation or structure in their communications. For example, there are a lot of shy people in listening professions, such as counseling, that provide one-on-one work in which the participants take turns talking.Other techniques create a barrier between people. Working with computers, as Steve Wozniak did at Apple, allows a shy person to communicate in a way that is once removed from others. Similarly, the radio personality Garrison Keeler always talks about how radio can be liberating for a shy person because is both very intimate but also distant. Keeler said he liked doing radio because he didnt have to worry about people looking at their watches or yawning.Dont try to fightshynessShyness is not just something we can shake off. Its a resilient part of our personalities. Partly because shyness itself is so resilient, though, shy people are of ten very resilient themselves. The answer to how to succeed as a shy person isnt to try to defeat shyness. The key is for us all is to understand the role of shyness in our lives and make choices that work best for us.As told to Kirsten Salyer.Joe Moran is a Professor of English and Cultural History at Liverpool John Moores University and the author of Shrinking Violets.

How to Get Your First Creative Job in Advertising

How to Get Your First Creative Job in AdvertisingHow to Get Your First Creative Job in AdvertisingThe task of breaking into advertising can range from tough to seemingly impossible. Youll need luck, skill, people on the inside and the kind of determination that would make Genghis Khan look like a couch potato. But if you apply yourself and sink your teeth into the task, you can do it. You may have to take less money than you would initially like, and you definitely willhave to make sacrifices, but its worth it. Get Busy on Spec Work First and foremost, you need a great portfolio. Dont believe the movies and TV shows - you canbedrngnis worm your way into an ad agency on charmand a few after-hours drinks at a local bar with the creative director. You need solid, original ideas. Opinions will vary on what is good and bad and what level of finish your ideas should have, but most experienced creative people want to see great ideas, regardless of finish. If its truly innovative but yo u dont have the skills to get it polished, theyll still value the ideas because they are the driving force behind good ads. To show off your work, you must have an online portfolio. Lets face it, the days of leather cases are over. Work on Your Portfolio Since were on the subject of portfolios, take the time to perfect it. As mentioned above, most people dont want (or have the time) to look over a hard-cover portfolio. So going online to showcase your work is key to help advance your career and land you that great first job. Building your portfolio isnt really as difficult as it may seem. There are many sites with templates to buy or use for free for any career including creative advertising. You can input images, videos and graphics, and design a portfolio in no time. But if youre really a genius and think you can handle coding and design, why not build your own website? This may be another way to stand out from the crowd and show a creative director that you have what it takes to work at his agency. Stand Out Good advertising agencies are constantly bombarded with applications from eager, creative people looking for jobs. They will flood HR with portfolio sites, resumes, YouTube videos, Facebook posts and everything else now available to job seekers. To stand out, you need to do what all good advertising does - get the attention of the intended audience. In this case, your intended audience is the creative director. Have the courage to be original and youll have the best opportunity to get noticed. As you try to stand out, make sure there is substance behind your ideas and your approach. Gimmicks are shallow and will quickly be seen for what they are, so avoid them. Freelance So, youve applied for job after job and youre still not getting anywhere. Now its time to consider temporary employment. Agencies have different budgets, and typically have money for freelancers even if they have a full permanent staff. How they spend that money depends on the accounts that need help, so ask. Do they have big pitches coming up where you could help? Are some teams overloaded and in need of assistance? It never hurts to ask. Just remember, charge the rate you deserve at first. If theyre not biting, and this is a genuine attempt to get into that agency, start looking at reductions. But dont make this a habit. Work for Free If the agency wont pay you, and you really are as good as you say you are, do the work for free. Not for months, not even weeks, but ask for an opportunity and show them how you would attack it. Agencies rarely turn down an offer of free help, and you may just wow them enough to get some paid work. It may even lead to a job. Consider your time a valuable investment in your future. Go to Industry Events Finally, get into the habit of mingling. Its sometimescalled networking or schmoozing, but whatever its called, you need to get yourself out there. Look on your local Egotist and youll soon see a list of weekly events taking distributions-mix in your area. You can also try Meetup groups for industry-related events. Join the local Art Directors Club or do a search for advertising lectures near you. Get out to as many of these as you can while youre looking and make sure you have something memorable to give people when you do connect. Tap Into LinkedIn If you havent already, you should create a LinkedIn profile. This site allows you to make professional connections in your industry, get recommendations, and search for jobs. According to the site, more than 80% of recruiters are now advertising jobs and seeking new talent on LinkedIn. As of November 2018, there were more than 120,000 advertising jobs posted on the site. Now that you know that, here are a few suggestions to make the most of your profile Keep your profile up-to-date. An old, outdated profile just doesnt cut it. The same goes with a profile that doesnt give any detail. It shows that you just arent committed.Make sure you hav e a clear, professional photo to add to your profile - so forget that selfie you took when you were out with your friends.Be clear about your skills and your objectives. This will help lead you to the right people, and will also point those searching directly to you.Make sure you highlight all of your relevant experience, including any volunteer or freelance work that youve done. And dont forget, LinkedIn has industry-specific groups you can join to help broaden your networking circle. Not only will this help you tap into the right stream of people, you may gain access to events in your area to lead you to them.

Regional Australia Is the grass really greener

Regional Australia Is the grass really greener Regional Australia Is the grass really greener?Posted May 15, 2014, by Julia Watters According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 68.4 per cent of the Australian population lives in major cities. That leaves just 19.7 per cent for innerhalb dezentral areas, 9.5 per cent in outer regional areas and 1.5 per cent and 0.8 per cent in remote and very remote areas respectively. With smaller populations, it should come as no surprise that regional areas are crying out for skilled workers. In fact, a recent Career FAQs article on skills shortages in Australia outlined what we all know with more people to draw from, metro areas have significantly higher rates of both applicants and filled vacancies in the workforce when compared to regional areas. Initiatives, such as the New South Wales Governments Evocities project are designed to address just this problem. The Evocities project profiles the states bustling regional cities in reservieru ng to entice urban dwellers to make the move, with the seven centres highlighted including Albury, Armidale, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga. Evocities latest statement outlines that the main professionals in demand for these areas are doctors, nurses, tradespeople and teachers. Evocities advertising campaign According to recruitment data collected by Evocities, healthcare professionals are the most sought-after in these particular Evocities, accounting for 17 per cent of jobs advertised. This is closely followed by tradespeople (15 per cent), educators (14 per cent) and community welfare workers (9 per cent). This data is collected via EvoJobs, an online portal designed to connect job seekers with employers and recruitment agencies through free job advertisement opportunities. And its not just these industries that are looking for workers. EvoJobs has recorded over 13,000 vacancies across its seven featured regional cities since 2010, many of which are from othe r industries such as the legal sector and technology companies. Evocities spokesperson James Treloar believes this emphasises that regional areas offer just as many, if not more, rewarding career options for job hunters We know through our research that one in four Sydneysiders would consider a move to an Evocity, chasing the lure of less traffic, a great lifestyle, affordable real estate and a welcoming community in which to raise a family. Holding many people back from making the move is a misguided perception that quality jobs dont exist in regional areas. We know that 330 new jobs are being posted every week across our seven cities, the majority of which receive fewer applications than Sydney job vacancies, presenting an exciting opportunity for jobseekers. But you dont just have to take Treloars word for it. Evocities has plenty of testimonials from people who have made the move and arent looking back. And before you go thinking that a regional move is reserved for families a nd those looking towards retirement, a fresh start might be suitable for any stage of life. Kate Lawrence is a 27-year-old Italian teacher who admits Dubbo welches not her first choice when looking to for a place settle, but decided to follow her lebensgefhrte who had seen the opportunity to move regionally and start his own kitchen renovation business In Sydney I would have been waiting 510 years before a permanent Italian job came up. Since arriving in Dubbo I have started a successful Italian program and have just returned from a school tour in Italy. Among the perks, Kate finds the low cost of living, the ease of getting to work and social outings at the top of her list. In fact, after only a year of renting in Dubbo, Kate and her partner were able to purchase their own apartment and are looking forward to continuing making connections and developing a support network in their new home town. The regional life isnt just for tradies and teachers, though. Joshua Broad was work ing as an investment banker in Sydney when he and his wife, Gemma, a primary school teacher, decided to move out of the city when they were expecting their first child. The couple, in their early 30s, chose Albury as the place to start their new family but were concerned about missing friends and the excitement of big city living. There are sacrifices that come with the move, they said. But Albury is small enough to feel a part of a community yet big enough to be anonymous. It has most things you want in terms of health, entertainment and education and accessibility to a major city Melbourne. Joshua now works as a financial planner and is enjoying a less stressful but equally challenging role in finance. They have recently bought a house and enjoy being able to spend more time with their baby, Beau, as a result of short commutes and community life. So next time youre sitting in gridlock traffic on your hour-long commute to work, remember theres an alternative route that could get you to where you want to be faster. Whether youre looking for new opportunities in your current profession or you want to explore other avenues by retraining, regional Australia could have just what youre looking for. When to Job Hop and When to Stay Put

When to Job Hop and When to Stay PutWhen to Job Hop and When to Stay PutA generation or two ago, it was expected that youd get hired at a job in your 20s and stay there until you retired. But as our attention spans shortened, so has our ability to stay at a single company. According to a May 2014CareerBuilder study, 25 percent of workers have held five or more jobs by age 35.But how do employers feel about it?Is your desire to continually search for greener pastures wrecking your option of getting hired? It depends on where you are in your career path. Employers are seemingly more tolerant of job hopping in young careerists who are still trying to find their foothold on the corporate ladder. Naturally, you wouldnt want to stay in an entry-level position for the rest of your life, so theres some leeway while youre still gaining experience and seeking progressively better roles. How you define job hopping is important. Some statistics show that the average employee stays at a company f or about four years, while a younger employee stays there for closer to two. So were elend talking three-month stints here. It depends on your industry.Employers in certain fields tend to expect employees to job hop more, due to talent shortage, extreme demand and assertive recruiters. According to CareerBuilder, the top industries with employers that expect staff to job hop are information technology, leisure and hospitality, transportation, retail and manufacturing. When should you job hop?Leaping from one job to another for the sake of novelty may not be the best career strategy, but here are a few situations that may warrant a change of sceneryYou want to expand your skills. Perhaps youve mastered every task your current role requires, and youre ready to learn more and expand your experience. If youve exhausted resources at your current company, it may be time to find a more challenging role elsewhere. You want to move in another direction. If youre a recent grad, you may have dis covered that the career path you had planned isnt ideal for you. If thats the case, make a move now, so you can put in time in your new field, gain experience and move up that ladder.Youre not getting paid what youre worth. Despite all your successes and milestone accomplishments, the employees at your company are notoriously underpaid. If you dont see a chance of pay that reflects your increasing responsibilities, it might be time to move on.Theres no career path. Many of us want to get promotions and increasingly better job titles, preferably at the company where we currently work. If this is important to you, and your company cant give you a clear path of what you need to do to gain additional responsibilities, you may have butted up against the ceiling. When should you stay put? While these examples may warrant seeking out employment elsewhere, there does come a point when employers dont want to see so many positions and companies on yourrsum. CareerBuilders research shows that 41 percent of employers find it less acceptable when a job candidate in her mid-30s continues to job hop. So if youre approaching this age, or are already past it, consider settling in. Or at least give a company more time before moving on.Lindsay Olsonis a founding partner and public relations recruiter with Paradigm Staffing and Hoojobs,a niche job boardfor public relations, communications and social media jobs. WNBAs Angel McCoughtry on benefits of taking a forced break

WNBA's Angel McCoughtry on benefits of taking a forced break WNBA's Angel McCoughtry on benefits of taking a forced break Angel McCoughtry has learned that chasing her dreams doesn’t have to come at the expense of her mental and physical health, and she’s determined to share that lesson with anyone who will listen. The 31-year-old WNBA player and Olympic gold medalist took a break from basketball in 2017 to recharge and focus on herself. She left toxic relationships behind, and opened an ice cream shop (McCoughtry’s) in Atlanta along the way. It was a bold move for the five-time All-Star who had gotten used to playing basketball year-round, as a result of the WNBA season and playing overseas during off seasons. The Atlanta Dream forward returned to the WNBA for the 2018 season, signing a multi-year deal with the team. With the return of their franchise player, who scored a career-high 39 points against New York earlier this year, the Dream has had one of the best records in the league this season. But McCoughtry’s comeback season came to an early end after she tore ligaments in her knee earlier t his month. Now, she’s cheering on her teammates in the playoffs from the sidelines (“I’m going to give them all the energy I have for them to be successful and accomplish them winning a championship”).“I was in a slump for the last two days and I was just like ‘Damn, why is this happening,’ ” McCaughtry said, while resting in her home just days after the “devastating” injury. Taking what she’s learned from her time away in 2017, McCoughtry is now calling the forced break a “blessing in disguise.” While she recovers and prepares for what she believes will be her greatest comeback yet, the 31-year-old with a sweet tooth for ice cream and a passion for inspiring the next generation of athletes hopes to figure out what’s next for her beyond the WNBA.- - - Shondaland: Why was it important for you to take time off in 2017?Angel McCoughtry: It was just something my spirit told me to do. I did it to recharge a lot of things, and I think I got to see a lot of th ings in my life that were wrong and right that I needed to change. When you’re always on the go you don’t have time to really reflect and think or see anything. I had a lot of toxic people around me. After I took off I separated from a relationship that was toxic. It really, really helped me to readjust and reevaluate my life [to be] the way it’s supposed to be.SL: How have you learned to incorporate time for recharging into your busy schedule since your break?AM: I know now how to get some peace of mind. You can think when you have quiet [time]. You can learn [about] yourself when you’re by yourself. Now I take more time to do that. Before, I was always on the go and overseas for eight years straight. Even now with my injury, I gotta learn how to just sit down.SL: You’ve talked about being worried to tell your grandma that you were taking a break and how she was ultimately supportive of you doing what was best for you. Have you found that that continues to be the case wit h family and friends?“People want us to live our truth. They want to see our struggles.”AM: Sometimes we do so much living for others. I was so worried about, “Oh, my family isn’t going to [be able to] watch me. They love watching me play.” But, what about me? You have to live for yourself. For example, I did the ESPN Body Issue [in 2014] and I was so worried about what my dad was going to say. I was going to turn it down but I said, “You know what, I’m going to just do it. I can’t worry about what they’re going to say.” And it was so tastefully done. I got so many compliments. Everybody loved it, [and] even my dad went, “Well, I didn’t want you to do it, but it was alright.” The thing about it is people want us to live our truth. They want to see our struggles. We don’t have to hide that.SL: You have such a positive outlook following your injury, but you’re still a competitor. Returning to the court only to then get injured has to be frustrating.AM: Iâ €™m devastated. We have a chance in the playoffs. This [was] a chance for me to win my first ring. This is a setback, but [I’m focused on] how I’m going to come back from this. People are watching. And I’m going to show them that it’s not over.SL: You opened an ice cream shop, McCoughtry’s, in Atlanta with no financial backers during your time off. How did that idea come about?AM: I love ice cream. I can eat it every day. I [figured this is] a way to give back to the community, give jobs to the kids and put smiles on people’s faces. I was in Turkey about three years ago and I started doing research on it. It took about two years to get it open. I put all my financial backing into it. I didn’t have help from anybody, but here we are. I would say it’s definitely not easy but people have accepted it, they love it, and I think it’s been something really great for the community.SL: What’s your favorite ice cream?AM: At my ice cream shop we have an apple pie flavor and it’s so good. I’m not a big fan of apple pie, but this ice cream is delicious.SL: What’s next for McCoughtry’s?AM: We got an offer from the University of Louisville where I went to school to open up the ice cream shop there. I’m definitely working on that to hopefully open up a franchise in next spring. Fingers crossed.SL: What have you learned as a businesswoman that you’ve been able to transfer to your role as an athlete?“We’re fighting for the younger generation that comes up in the WNBA to get paid what they deserve.”AM: One thing I learned is I want my employees to do well so people will come back and buy ice cream. That’s the same thing with us [as players on the Dream]. We have owners that want to sell tickets. We have to perform at a high level. We have to put a smile on their faces and show that we’re happy with what we’re doing. I never knew that until I got a business. I’m like, wow, I have to give 110 percent every night on that floor because w e have people backing us out of their funds to make sure we have a women’s team in this city. We don’t sell tickets like the men; I feel like we deserve [to] but we don’t. [Owners are] putting money into us every year and maybe they’re not always breaking even.SL: You’ve been open about the burnout that occurs from playing year-round, as well as wanting to see an increase in WNBA wages. Why is speaking out about that so important to you?AM: I was on TMZ and they asked me about [WNBA wages] and I said I want to get paid more in my own country. I got all of these evil messages from guys. “You’ll never be like the NBA. You’re stupid. Get back in the kitchen.” Where do these comments come from? I never said I want to make millions like the NBA players. What I said was I want to make more in my own country.SL: Those comments haven’t discouraged you from continuing to be vocal about the issue.AM: We’re fighting for the younger generation that comes up in the WNBA to get paid what they deserve. I may not get that salary. I make $100,000 dollars in the WNBA. I’m the No. 1 draft pick. So [are] Candace Parker [and] Mia Moore. They make the same. There’s no negotiation. But we’re fighting so that the girls five to 10 years from now can get their first million-dollar contract. That’s what I want to see. This is for them.SL: You can’t play basketball for the next six to eight months. What will you do until you can get back on the court?AM: I’m going to work on me. This is a good challenge. I want to do some basketball camps. I want to do some hosting, maybe some broadcasting and a little bit of acting. I’m in the process now of diving into [acting]. I think that I’m funny. I just think I want to have another hobby to express myself. I’ve always thought if [basketball] stopped right now, what am I going to do? I could never figure it out - now I have no choice but to.This interview has been edited and condensed.Jewel Wicker is an Atl anta-based reporter covering entertainment and culture. How Failing at Job Interviews Helped Me Get Hired

How Failing at Job Interviews Helped Me Get Hired How Failing at Job Interviews Helped Me Get Hired Do you want to quit your job search? Please read this post before you do. Getting rejected after job interviews for all those dream positions you want can take a toll on your confidence. However, within all this pain from rejection hides an opportunity to grow and move forward. Failing does not make you less of a job candidate. You are simply learning what steps you should take next. Between 2016 and 2017, I had a large number of terrible interviews. But in the end, it all taught me how to get hired. It taught me how to be better at my job today. Here is how it happened. I got tired of waiting for explanations in rejection emails I have some bad news. There are two reasons employers rarely explain why someone was rejected for a job in a way that validates our job seeking efforts: Explanations open up the floor for debate between candidate and company Explanations can be misinterpreted and can possibly lead to legal trouble Those who attempt the good deed of explaining often get harmed in the end EEOC laws are important for protecting the rights of individuals. Yet, this 2017 EEOC press release shows the potential cost to companies who deal with EEOC charges. Sadly, every law with a positive intention often leads to those with ill intentions taking it for granted. If they feel angry at a company for their hiring decision, they will express it through a lawsuit or negative social media. Companies spend millions of dollars every year to avoid lawsuits and negative PR. I discovered “explaining things to me” was their way of minimizing risk. So, I stopped waiting for explanations behind why I was rejected. Here is what I did instead of waiting I became a dedicated listener during my interviews. In my younger days in theatre acting, I was taught to live in the moment, never break eye contact, or never break character. I played the role of professional, charismatic job seeker. I became dedicated to listening for the following: The subtext of what was being said to me (ie. things they implied). Facial cues while I explained certain things. Body movements of the interviewer as they reviewed my resume. Energy in the room between me and the interviewers. Looks on people’s faces when I walked around the office. Words used by the interviewer to explain how they feel about my candidacy Then, something great started to happen! I heard the exact reasons why I will be rejected I started hearing employers tell me during the job interview: Skills I should be focusing on What makes me an attractive candidate and what does not How to improve my resume When to stop talking during an interview Possible professions I should investigate When I should never have had an interview in the first place When I really liked the company but knew I had no place in it It was not always easy to stomach. It was humbling. No one likes being told, “You are doing it all wrong” in a job interview. Yet, the more I accepted how little I know, the more I listened and learned. I also wrote down what I was hearing. Here are snippets from interview failures I share with you many things said to me during and after a failed interview, and how I interpreted it. I kept a log of these interview snippets because I needed time to absorb what I was being told. 1. “You say you know Google Analytics. Do you mean you have been exposed to it? Or do you know how it actually works?” What they meant: You don’t know as much as you think. Find out why. The interviewer seemed unhappy. 2. “Just because you know how to Google what to do, does not mean you now know how to do it.” What they meant: I have more to learn about the skills I claim to possess. The interviewer seemed frustrated from the moment he put down my resume. 3. “First, let me be honest, this job is not brain surgery.” What they meant: You are going to get bored by this job quickly because you are smart. Take it as a good thing if you get rejected. 4. “You led a team of 10 in the past. What makes you think you can lead 20 or 30?” What they meant: They are doubting my confidence level right now. The interviewer was looking me up and down with doubt. Made me want to ask why. 5. “Wow! You look like someone who enjoys traveling. This job does not require travel. Is that a problem?” What they meant: You will leave this job the minute something better comes along. The interviewer said this but did not seem impressed. After 1000 online applications and 20 job interviews I was honest with myself, finally. I looked back at my notes and started taking action. I started looking for assistance on LinkedIn. I was messaged on LinkedIn by the founder of a company who helped me get more interviews and redo my resume, Find My Profession. I started taking training, courses and consulted others using the skills I was learning from simply going through the interview process and listening. I even did a personality test to discover what companies might see me as a culture fit. A few months later, I was hired to work in a position where I now help people find work. The final lesson learned Choose to obey the actions you should take during a job search. Do not obey your feelings of regret and disappointment. Learn to see when you are doing something right or missed the mark a little bit. I was taught how to get hired by some of the most well-known companies in the USA. The lessons I learned through actions, failing, and staying dedicated to improving, went much further than waiting for explanations on why I was rejected.

Reports of the Cover Letters Demise Are 86% Wrong

Reports of the Cover Letter's Demise Are 86% Wrong Reports of the Cover Letter's Demise Are 86% Wrong Reports of the Cover Letter's Demise Are 86% Wrong There's no question that the emergence of the personal computer and stratospheric rise of the Internet have forever altered the world of the job search. A mere two decades ago, a job seeker used one or two generic resumes to apply to several openings. Today, the recommended practice is a customized resume for each position. And, poring over pages of classified ads in the Sunday paper for your next career move has evolved into posting resumes on job boards, searching the web for advertised positions, and networking online to find someone who knows someone who can suggest your name for that job that would be just right for you. There are even some who go as far to suggest that all this technology has made the cover letter an anachronism. Don't believe it for even a nanosecond. A survey conducted by an independent research firm and developed by OfficeTeam, a staffing service that places administrative professionals, found an overwhelming 86% of executives polled said cover letters are valuable when evaluating job candidates. Hiring managers want to hire people who have the chops to do a certain job, but most also want to hire people whose personalities would fit in with the corporate culture and mesh with the rest of the staff. While a resume can detail your qualifications, a well written cover letter offers the hiring manager or recruiter that first glimpse of who you are, what makes you tick, and whether you would fit in with the company. Submitting a resume without a cover letter is like not shaking hands when meeting someone for the first time, says Dave Willmer, executive director of OfficeTeam. Those who aren't including cover letters with their resumes are missing an opportunity to make a good first impression and set themselves apart from other job applicants. He adds: A cover letter should demonstrate the applicant's knowledge of the company, highlight applicable skills and work experience, and explain any resume anomalies, such as extended employment gaps. A well done cover letter serves not only as the gateway to your resume, but also sends a clear message that you can do your homework, you know yourself well, and especially by explaining large gaps in your work history that you're forthright and honest. And what employer would not want someone with those qualities?

Satisfaction at work is by far the #1 thing that makes men happy

Satisfaction at work is by far the #1 thing that makes men happy Satisfaction at work is by far the #1 thing that makes men happy A new study of 5,000 American men found that the #1 factor that makes men happy is being satisfied at work â€" ranking far above health and income. The study was sponsored by the men’s grooming company, Harry’s, in partnership with Dr. John Barry of University College London, with the aim of identifying the “values and priorities” of American men, as well as the contributors to their emotional, physical and mental health, and general wellbeing â€" in short, their happiness. The men ranged from 18-95 and lived all over the country. The values American men most desire, the study says in its introduction, are those of “everyday heroes: “fathers, father figures, respectful co-workers, mentors. There are hardworking, loving, friendly men with a conscience … ” These gentle, Christ-like values, combined with the existence of a conscience, it is explained, is “great news for the men, women, and children in America.”But really, it’s good for jobs, and vice-versa. Onto the data. The strongest indicator of a “positive mindset” in men is being satisfied with their work â€" it’s three times higher than the next-strongest indicatorThe “positive mindset index” used in the study included feeling more “optimistic, happy, motivated, emotionally stable, confident, with a sense of control.” Therefore, the more fulfillment at work that men felt, the more they felt those emotions.94% of men with the highest job satisfaction rating had normal or better levels of mental positivity compared to 49% who gave the lowest rating for job satisfaction. After work gratification, the things next-strongest indicators of a positive mindset were: their health income age â€" men get happier as they get older being married sports and leisure The top event that made this group of men satisfied at work wasn’t income â€" it was making a difference: Engagement matters.Pop quiz: Who’s the happiest man in America? According to the study, it’s married men over 50 who have found fulfillment in their job, have a good income, and take care of their health. But if you’re a man and you can only pick one, strive for happiness in your job â€" that’ll get you most of the way there.

5 Basic Cover Letter Questions Answered

5 Basic Cover Letter Questions Answered 5 Basic Cover Letter Questions Answered 5 Basic Cover Letter Questions Answered 1) What is a cover letter? A cover letter is a 1-page letter that you submit with your resume when you apply for a job. 2) Whats the purpose of writing a cover letter? Quite simply, the cover letters goal is to persuade the prospective employer to look at your resumeand the resumes goal is to get you an interview. (And it's during the interview process that actual hiring decisions are made.) 3) Why do you need a cover letter? Only about a third of job candidates use cover letters, so just by sending one, youve differentiated yourself from about two-thirds of the competition. Some employers reject applicants without cover letters. Other employers dont care about cover letters, but they wont penalize you for sending one. Theres no way to know how a given employer feels about cover letters, so send one just to be on the safe side. 4) What does a cover letter do that a resume doesnt? It introduces you and adds a personal element by putting the facts of your resume into context. It calls attention to your most relevant qualifications for the job. It acknowledges and helps the employer understand (and hopefully overlook) any employment gaps, lack of experience, or other red flags on your resume. It expresses your enthusiasm for the job. It serves as a sample of your writing skills. It shows that youre willing to play the game, even if it requires a little extra effort. 5) What are some tips for writing a cover letter? Never copy a cover letter template or sample cover letter word for word. Write in full sentences and paragraphs. Keep your language clear and concise; avoid long-winded explanations. Its OK to use the words I, me, or my, but sparingly. Show some personality by using a conversational style not too formal, but still professional.
